To: U.S. Senate: We, the undersigned, demand that the Senate reject any attempt to smuggle the SAVE America Act - or any provision of it - into a budget reconciliation bill. This is a backdoor assault on voting rights, and the American people see it for exactly what it is. Speaker Mike Johnson wedged voter suppression provisions into a massive budget package, forcing through restrictions on voting access without a fair, standalone debate. This is not good governance. This is a scheme. At the center of Johnson's plan is a $10 billion pot of incentives designed to pressure states into imposing strict voter ID requirements and mandatory citizenship checks on every voter. These are not election integrity measures. They are barriers - erected specifically to make it harder for young people, students, women, and communities of color to cast a ballot. For college students, the SAVE Act's requirements are not a minor inconvenience. Many students don't carry the specific documents these laws demand. They move frequently. They are registered in one state and living in another. Citizenship documentation requirements and rigid ID laws are designed to create exactly the kind of confusion and bureaucratic friction that discourages first-time and young voters from participating at all. This is happening right now, in the dark, tucked into a budget bill most Americans will never read. Republicans are also using this moment to advance companion bills targeting sanctuary cities and birthright citizenship. It is election-year voter suppression dressed up as legislating. This is not about fraud. This is about fear - specifically, Republican fear of young voters, new voters, and the growing political power of a diverse electorate. They know that their policies are deeply unpopular and the only way to win is to cheat. We demand the Senate: ❌ Reject any budget reconciliation package that includes SAVE Act provisions, voter ID incentives, or citizenship check requirements. ❌ Refuse to reward states that erect new barriers to voter registration and ballot access. ❌ Block the use of the budget process to bypass proper democratic debate on voting rights legislation. ✅ Demand a standalone, transparent debate on any legislation affecting how Americans register and vote. ✅ Pass the Freedom to Vote Act to protect early voting, same-day registration, and accessible ballots for every eligible American - including the millions of college students who vote away from home. ✅ Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the federal protections that have been systematically dismantled. ✅ Hold hearings specifically on the impact of voter ID and citizenship documentation requirements on young voters, students, and first-time voters. We will not let Senate Republicans rig elections. Young voters are watching. We are organized. And we will remember every vote cast to suppress ours. Sign this petition to demand the Senate keep voter suppression out of the budget - and out of our democracy!
