Protect Workers' Paychecks from Medical Debt

Right now, more than a third of Americans with medical debt have had to cut back on necessities like food, heat, or rent, and a similar share have delayed or avoided needed healthcare.

No one should be forced to cut back on necessities to pay for healthcare. But in 45 states, workers can still have wages garnished to collect medical debt and in some cases, up to 25% of their disposable earnings. 

That's why House Democrats Reps. Bobby Scott, Ilhan Omar, and Greg Casar have just introduced legislation to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to prohibit wage garnishment for medical debt nationwide. 

Tell your member of Congress to protect everyone's access to the healthcare they need and stop debt collectors from forcibly taking a cut of workers' paychecks. 

Healthcare is already getting harder to afford. About 8 million Americans have lost or dropped coverage since early 2025, while the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies has made health insurance more expensive for millions of people.

With medical costs rising and federal support vanishing, we can't allow debt collectors to take wages away from those who need them most.
