Don't Let Trump Bulldoze Big Bend National Park

Bulldozers were recently seen clearing land in Big Bend National Park, tearing up native cottonwood and willow trees along the Rio Grande to make way for Trump’s border infrastructure.

Now, after strong opposition from advocates and elected officials, CBP has announced a temporary pause while its commissioner visits the park for an “on-the-ground evaluation.” That proves public pressure is working — but a pause is not permanent protection.

Plans for the region include 200 miles of patrol roads, vehicle barriers, detection technology, cameras, lighting, and other infrastructure that could scar one of our most iconic national parks.

Big Bend is home to some of Texas's most beautiful landscapes, as well as wildlife like the threatened western yellow-billed cuckoo, Montezuma quail, black bears, and peregrine falcons.

We can’t let Trump destroy another national treasure for an unnecessary border project. Tell Congress to make the Big Bend pause permanent and protect the park for good.

The Department of Homeland Security is granting contractors and government employees waivers to bypass protections like the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the National Park Service Organic Act in order to rush this project forward.

They are willing to sacrifice the region's environment even though Big Bend National Park has historically seen extremely low numbers of migrant crossings.

More than 140 groups, including local businesses, conservation advocates, and recreation groups, have called on elected leaders to protect Big Bend and stop the destruction.
