Trump’s NEPA Rollback Fast-Tracks Climate Disaster

The Trump Administration has just dismantled one of the strongest tools we have to slow climate chaos: the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

For more than 50 years, NEPA has required the federal government to evaluate how major projects — large highway projects, pipelines, drilling, mines — will impact our climate before they are approved. It forces agencies to account for pollution, consider cleaner alternatives, and disclose the long-term consequences of their decisions to the public.

Now, those protections are being stripped away.

By rescinding core NEPA regulations, the Trump Administration is making it easier to rubber-stamp fossil fuel projects without meaningful climate analysis or public scrutiny. This rollback weakens requirements to assess greenhouse gas emissions and cumulative impacts — at the exact moment scientists warn that every fraction of a degree matters.

NEPA has slowed climate-wrecking projects, exposed false industry claims, and created space for renewable alternatives. It has required agencies to acknowledge how fossil fuel infrastructure locks in decades of emissions and worsens climate impacts like extreme heat, flooding, and wildfires. Without NEPA’s guardrails, polluters face fewer obstacles — and communities face greater harm.

This isn’t about speeding up paperwork. NEPA reviews already move faster than the industry admits. This is about silencing science, sidelining climate impacts, and shutting the public out so polluting projects can move forward unchecked.

We cannot fight climate change while approving projects in the dark.

We are calling on Congress and the Administration to reverse this dangerous rollback and fully restore strong NEPA protections — including rigorous climate analysis and public participation.

The climate crisis demands more accountability, not less. More transparency, not secrecy. And decisions rooted in science — not industry pressure.
