The Farm Bill Should Help Hungry Americans

The Farm Bill is one of the largest and most important laws that Congress passes. Congress is working on the Farm Bill during the lame duck session of congress. It is important that the Farm Bill strengthens critical programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Food stamps), the Emergency Food Asstance Program and many others. These programs should not be cut but should be strengthened to help ensure that people do not go hungry. SNAP, in particular is a lifeline for many hungry families, providing around 40 million people with help buying food.

The Farm Bill should be more than giveaways to big agriculture but should include help for hungry Americans. It is shameful that anyone should go hungry in the richest country on earth. The Farm Bill is renewed every 5 years, so this is a great opportunity to strengthen the safety net. Congress should strengthen, not weaken, SNAP and other Food Assistance programs in the Farm Bill.
