Thank These 6 Citizens for Suing Over the Press Ban

Six ordinary Americans — a human rights advocate, a historian, a political journalist, a high school civics teacher, a legal journalist, and a college student editor — have filed a federal lawsuit against Trump over his White House press ban. Their argument is simple and powerful: when the government expels reporters for their coverage, it isn’t just the press that suffers. The public loses its right to independent information about its own government. As the Knight First Amendment Institute put it: “The White House cannot decide what information Americans receive by punishing critical reporting.”

What makes this lawsuit different from previous legal challenges is its scope. It doesn’t just seek to restore access for the outlets already banned — it asks for a broad injunction protecting every news organization from viewpoint-based retaliation, now and in the future. And it doesn’t speak on behalf of corporate media. It speaks on behalf of the rest of us: teachers who need accurate information to educate students, journalists who rely on a functioning press corps, and citizens who depend on independent reporting to participate in democracy.

We want to thank Kenneth Roth, Daniel Froomkin, Beverly Gage, Peter Schmidt-Nowara, Benjamin Wittes, and Ethan Young for standing up — not as members of the press, but as members of the public. They are making the argument that every American should be making: a free press isn’t just for journalists. It belongs to all of us. The public deserves reporting that treats their lawsuit with the gravity it deserves.
