Thank the Judge Who Ruled Against Journalist Job Cuts

A federal judge just stepped in to protect independent journalism — and the public’s right to know.

The court ruled that Kari Lake’s sweeping layoffs at Voice of America were unlawful, nullifying a move that threatened to gut one of the most important sources of fact-based news reaching millions around the world. The decision voided actions that sidelined journalists and weakened America’s commitment to a free press.

Voice of America exists to deliver accurate reporting to audiences living under censorship and propaganda. For decades, its journalists have reported the truth in places where independent media is under constant threat. Mass layoffs targeting those reporters have crippled that mission, but now their union can work towards putting them back to work.

By voiding Kari Lake’s authority to carry out mass layoffs, the judge affirmed a critical principle: the government cannot dismantle public-interest journalism without proper authority and leadership.

But the fight for press freedom isn’t over. Public support matters when the rule of law and independent journalism are under pressure.

Add your name today to thank the judge who stood up for press freedom and protected Voice of America’s journalists.

The petition reads: “Thank you for upholding the rule of law and protecting independent journalism by ruling against the unlawful layoffs at Voice of America.”
