Thank the Judge Who Defended Muslims' Civil Rights

A federal judge just stopped one of the most disturbing attacks on civil liberties in recent memory.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis attempted to label the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), one of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights organizations, a “terrorist organization.” Critics warned the move was a blatant attempt to target Muslim Americans and silence a group that advocates for their rights.

But the court stepped in.

This week, U.S. District Judge Mark E. Walker ruled that DeSantis does not have the authority to designate a civil rights group as a terrorist organization, blocking the order and defending the constitutional rights of Muslim Americans.

This ruling sends a powerful message: politicians cannot use government power to demonize communities or punish advocacy groups they dislike.
