Thank the Judge for Defending Press Freedom

In the early hours of Thursday morning, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a 14-day restraining order against Trump's White House press ban — ruling it most likely unconstitutional and ordering the immediate restoration of credentials for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. The White House initially defied it, turning reporters away anyway. By noon, they were let back in — though CNN flatly accused the administration of lying in a sworn statement about when access was actually restored.

This is a victory — and an incomplete one. Judge Kelly's ruling focused on due process, not the First Amendment, meaning the core free speech question remains unresolved. The administration has already signaled it will fight on. JD Vance was outed as the anonymous source behind one of the very stories Trump used to justify the ban — meaning the White House punished outlets for publishing information its own officials secretly provided.

We want to thank Judge Kelly for upholding the rule of law under enormous political pressure. We also urge the press to stay clear-eyed: a 14-day order is not a victory, it is a pause. The administration will be back in court. The ban on other outlets remains. And a White House that turns reporters away in defiance of a court order, then lies about it in a sworn statement, has shown exactly how far it is willing to go. The public is counting on journalists and judges alike to keep holding that line.
