We are deeply grateful to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for taking swift and courageous legal action to challenge the Trump administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan migrants. The ACLU’s new lawsuit shines a light on a dangerous abuse of wartime powers — a law designed for declared wars, now being used to justify deportations to a notorious prison in El Salvador. These actions not only violate due process, but they also put lives at serious risk. We applaud the ACLU for standing up in court on behalf of individuals who face indefinite imprisonment, torture, or worse — often without ever having the chance to defend themselves. The ACLU is reminding America that even in times of political pressure and fear-mongering, constitutional rights and human dignity must be upheld. At a moment when due process is under attack, and secretive deportations are being carried out with alarming speed, we thank the ACLU for taking a stand for transparency, fairness, and justice. Thank you for defending the rights of immigrants, holding this administration accountable, and standing up for the rule of law. We’ve got your back.
