Thank NY for Strengthening Domestic Violence Protections

We applaud Governor Kathy Hochul for signing Melanie’s Law, a landmark piece of legislation that expands protections for victims of domestic violence and their families. Named after Melanie Chianese, who tragically lost her life to domestic violence, this law closes a dangerous loophole, allowing courts to issue orders of protection for immediate family or household members of victims, regardless of age.

This critical legislation ensures that survivors and their loved ones are safeguarded from harm, extending protection beyond minors to encompass adult family members. As Governor Hochul said, “Every person deserves to be protected.”

By passing Melanie’s Law, New York State has taken a powerful step forward in defending victims of domestic violence, providing compassionate legal protections, and honoring Melanie’s legacy.

Sign our petition to thank Governor Hochul and New York lawmakers for their leadership in protecting victims and closing a life-threatening gap in domestic violence laws. Together, let’s ensure every person has the safety and protection they deserve.
