Thank Newsom and Hochul for Protecting Planned Parenthood

In the face of cruel federal cuts to reproductive health care, two Democratic governors are stepping up to defend patients, providers, and the fundamental right to choose.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and California Governor Gavin Newsom have announced major new funding to keep Planned Parenthood clinics open and protect access to essential reproductive care after Donald Trump and congressional Republicans slashed Medicaid support for providers offering abortion services.

Governor Hochul pledged $35 million to cover New York’s funding gap, while Governor Newsom committed $140 million to sustain clinics across California. Together, their actions will protect care for over 1.2 million patients, ensuring continued access to cancer screenings, contraception, prenatal care, STI testing, and safe, legal abortion.

As Governor Newsom said, “California is a reproductive freedom state.” And Governor Hochul made clear that New York will not allow extremists in Washington to dictate the health care decisions of women and families.

Their leadership shows what real compassion and courage look like — standing up for people’s health, dignity, and freedom even when the federal government turns its back.
