Thank Montana Lawmakers for Rejecting Discrimination

We applaud Montana lawmakers for rejecting a discriminatory measure that sought to bar state Rep. Zooey Zephyr, Montana’s first openly transgender legislator, from using the women’s restroom in the state Capitol. By voting against this divisive proposal, lawmakers upheld the principles of equality, respect, and focus on the real issues impacting Montana residents.

The bipartisan decision by the House Rules Committee—where four Republicans joined Democrats in opposing the measure—sends a clear message that Montana’s legislature values inclusion and is dedicated to prioritizing meaningful work over political distractions.

Rep. Zephyr’s poise and commitment to serving her constituents, despite facing censure and other challenges, serve as an inspiring example of leadership. We thank the lawmakers who stood against this measure and ensured the Montana Legislature remains a space of dignity and respect for all elected representatives.
