The rapid boom in massive data centers across the United States is raising alarms about electricity use, water consumption, and pressure on local communities. Some leaders in Congress are stepping up — and they deserve our thanks. Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Maxwell Frost, and others are calling for a temporary moratorium on new data centers while lawmakers study the industry’s environmental and economic impacts. That’s a common-sense step. Data centers powering AI and cloud computing can consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, often straining local infrastructure and driving up energy demand. A pause would give policymakers time to understand these impacts and create safeguards that protect communities and the climate. Tell Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Maxwell Frost, and their colleagues: Thank you for supporting a data center moratorium and pushing for responsible oversight of this fast-growing industry.
