Thank Judge Hollander for Protecting Social Security Privacy

We thank U.S. District Judge Ellen Lipton Hollander for her powerful ruling blocking the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing the sensitive personal data of millions of Americans stored by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Judge Hollander saw through the Trump administration’s reckless and invasive attempt to comb through private records without justification, calling their approach “hitting a fly with a sledgehammer.” Her ruling rightly protects Social Security numbers, medical histories, financial information, and other deeply personal data from unwarranted surveillance and misuse.

This case—brought by unions and advocacy organizations—highlighted what was at stake: the privacy of working people, retirees, and countless others who rely on Social Security. Judge Hollander’s decision sends a strong message that no agency—especially one operating under Elon Musk’s DOGE—can trample over privacy rights in the name of vague and unproven fraud claims.

The ruling is not only a win for privacy and common sense—it is a critical defense of the rule of law. By blocking DOGE’s unrestricted access and ordering the destruction of any improperly obtained data, Judge Hollander upheld the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability in government.
