We commend U.S. District Judge James Boasberg for standing up for the rule of law and blocking the Trump administration’s reckless attempt to invoke the Alien Enemies Act to deport noncitizens without due process. His swift action prevented immediate harm by stopping deportation flights already in motion and ensuring that those targeted—many of whom are seeking refuge from violence—are not unjustly removed. Trump’s order attempted to exploit an 18th-century wartime law to justify mass deportations without legal oversight. The administration’s claim of unchecked executive power not only violated constitutional protections but also disregarded human rights. Judge Boasberg rightly recognized that these deportations could send individuals into dangerous conditions, including imprisonment in foreign countries. Despite the Trump administration’s efforts to challenge his ruling, Judge Boasberg upheld basic legal principles, reaffirming that no president can act without accountability. His decision underscores the importance of judicial checks and balances in protecting due process and preventing executive overreach. We thank Judge Boasberg for his commitment to justice and urge continued resistance against efforts to erode legal protections for immigrants. We stand with him in defending democracy and the rights of all people!
