Thank Gov. Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta!

Huge news: Gov. Gavin Newsom has announced that California has filed a lawsuit against Exxon and four other fossil fuel bad actors for their decades of deception in lying to the public about climate change.

This lawsuit is a BFD! We’ve known since 2015 that Exxon, and other fossil fuel behemoths, knew back in the 1970s that burning their products would have a catastrophic impact on the planet – and they did it anyway while lying to the public. Approximately 30 cities, counties, and states have filed lawsuits against Exxon et al, and those cases are moving slooooowly through state courts. California has stayed out – until now. 

At Climate Hawks Vote, we’ve been leading since 2015 to bring Exxon to justice, and even in Democratic-dominated California, it’s been a long road. You might recall our work getting then-Attorney General Kamala Harris to disclose that her office opened an Exxon file. You might have signed one of our petitions to then-Attorney General Xavier Becerra trying, without success, to get him to take climate change seriously. We’ve done our part educating our current Rob Bonta on Exxon’s liability. And he’s actually listened to us!
