We celebrate and stand with American Oversight for taking bold legal action to hold Trump administration officials accountable for violating federal records laws. The recent revelation that national security leaders—including National Security Adviser Michael Waltz—used the encrypted Signal app to discuss classified military operations, including U.S. strikes in Yemen, is not only deeply reckless but a direct threat to transparency and the rule of law. Even more troubling, the chat reportedly included a journalist and occurred in a disappearing message thread — far from the secure channels required for such sensitive discussions. Now, thanks to American Oversight’s lawsuit, these officials are being put on notice. By using the Administrative Procedure Act to demand a review of these unlawful actions, American Oversight is stepping in to protect the public’s right to know. Federal officials are required by the Federal Records Act to preserve their communications — especially when they pertain to matters as grave as war. As American Oversight stated: “War planning doesn’t belong in emoji-laden disappearing group chats. It belongs in secure facilities designed to safeguard national interests.” We couldn’t agree more. This lawsuit is a crucial step in preserving democracy, ensuring accountability, and defending the integrity of public records. The American people deserve answers — and we thank American Oversight for working to get them. Add your name to thank American Oversight for standing up for transparency and the truth.
