Tell Trump: Stop Paying Polluters to Wreck Our Future

The Trump administration isn’t just canceling offshore wind projects—it’s actively working to pay off even more companies to abandon projects that are already planned or underway. 

After handing out nearly $2 billion in taxpayer-funded payouts to shut down clean energy development, officials are now seeking additional deals to stop even more offshore wind projects before they can deliver power. 

The Department of the Interior has made clear it is driving this approach—saying it is following the model of its recent deal with TotalEnergies, which received a $1 billion payout to walk away from projects off North Carolina and New York. At a moment when we should be accelerating climate solutions, this administration is doubling down on wasting public money to block them.

The climate crisis is here—and getting worse every day. From record-breaking heat to devastating storms and rising seas, Americans are already paying the price.

So why is the federal government wasting hundreds of millions of our tax dollars to cancel clean energy projects?

That’s exactly what’s happening right now. The Trump administration is reportedly paying major energy companies nearly $900 million to walk away from offshore wind projects—on top of $1 billion already handed out for similar cancellations. Instead of building clean energy, these companies are being rewarded for doing nothing—or worse, reinvesting in fossil fuels.

It’s outrageous.

Offshore wind is one of our best tools to fight climate change. These projects can generate massive amounts of clean, renewable power, create thousands of good-paying jobs, and cut the pollution that’s driving this crisis.

But instead of moving forward, this administration is actively blocking progress—and forcing taxpayers to foot the bill.

Paying corporations to not build clean energy is the opposite of responsible leadership. It’s a giveaway to polluters, a setback for our economy, and a direct threat to our climate future.

We should be investing in solutions—not paying to destroy them. It’s time to stop wasting taxpayer money and start building a clean energy future.
