In a recent interview on Fox Business, Energy Secretary and former fracking CEO Chris Wright downplayed the reality of climate change, saying, “There’s pluses to global warming as well as negatives.” He added that “a warmer planet with more CO2 is better for growing plants.” His remarks are misleading and give cover to polluters who are causing the catastrophes around us all. As the leader of the Department of Energy, Secretary Wright should be working to find solutions in the fight against climate change. Instead, he appeared on Fox Business and promoted a harmful narrative that undermines the need for urgent action to address the climate crisis saying, “The bottom line is, it’s just nowhere near the world’s biggest problem today.” Secretary Wright’s comments–which echo the rhetoric of climate change denial–ignore overwhelming scientific consensus: climate change is causing catastrophic damage, and it is getting worse. It is his job as the Energy Secretary to seek progress, not to defend fossil fuel companies. We are all experiencing the effects of increasingly severe wildfires, rising sea levels, stronger storms, and disruptions to ecosystems and communities. The overwhelming majority of scientists agree that human activity—particularly the burning of fossil fuels—is driving this crisis. But instead of leading and seeking solutions, Secretary Wright is minimizing the scale of the problem. Secretary Wright needs to leave his fracking CEO ideology behind and stop denying the reality of climate change and instead start leading the way toward a sustainable future.
