Tell Trump: Hands Off the Department of Education

Donald Trump has announced plans to dismantle the Department of Education, a reckless move that would devastate public schools, strip funding from low-income communities, and roll back protections for millions of students. This is not about improving education—it’s about gutting federal oversight to push a far-right agenda that harms students and teachers alike.

Eliminating the Department of Education would slash funding for schools in low-income areas, forcing already struggling districts to cut teachers, resources, and essential programs. It would remove protections for LGBTQ+ students, making it easier for schools to discriminate against them. And it would allow extremist politicians to rewrite history, stripping curricula of lessons about the civil rights movement, systemic racism, and other essential truths about American history.

In a letter to the Acting Secretary of Education, Sen. Bernie Sanders and other lawmakers made it clear that this cannot happen: "We will not stand by and allow this to happen to the nation's students, parents, borrowers, educators, and communities. Congress created the department to ensure all students in America have equal access to a high-quality education and that their civil rights are protected no matter their ZIP code."

Trump and his allies want a school system where students are misled, discrimination is allowed, and corporations profit while public education crumbles. This is not about improving education—it’s about defunding public schools while funneling money into private interests.

We cannot allow Trump to erase the federal government’s role in ensuring equal access to quality education. Congress must stand firm against this attack and protect funding, civil rights protections, and truth in education for all students.

Sign this petition to demand that Congress block Trump’s efforts to dismantle the Department of Education. Public education is a right, not a political bargaining chip. The future of our students—and our democracy—depends on it.
