Tell the NBA: Human Rights Over Profit

Right now, people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are experiencing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Amnesty International has determined that the armed group M23 is torturing and killing civilians with the support of Rwanda’s government.

So what does that have to do with basketball? The NBA has a major partnership with Rwanda and could be profiting off of these grave human rights abuses. Our activists called on NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to review the league’s partnership and ensure that no part of the money that Rwanda pays to the NBA comes from illicit funds acquired in eastern DRC that involve human rights abuses. The NBA still has not publicly committed to reexamining its policies or their partnership with the Rwandan Government.

The NBA needs to prove it puts people over profit and must demonstrate that it has done the necessary due diligence to ensure that it does not profit from this conflict and the human rights abuses involved.
