Tell the DOJ: Investigate Texas Republicans' Voter Purge

Texas Republicans are once again using underhanded tactics to suppress voter turnout. Governor Greg Abbott recently announced the removal of nearly one million people from the state's voter rolls.

This mass purge, carried out just before a major election, raises serious concerns that the true intent is to prevent legitimate voters from casting their ballots, especially those from marginalized communities.

While Texas officials claim this is routine "voter roll maintenance," history tells us otherwise. In 2019, a similar purge flagged nearly 100,000 voters as noncitizens, many of whom were later found to be naturalized citizens wrongly identified due to outdated or inaccurate data. The resulting scandal forced the resignation of the Texas Secretary of State and exposed the state's lack of transparency in handling voter data.

Tell the DOJ: Investigate Texas Republicans' latest voter suppression scheme.

Voting rights experts are sounding the alarm. Alice Clapman, senior counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice, has pointed out that these types of purges often disproportionately target communities of color and Democratic-leaning precincts. She warns that this is not about ensuring accurate voter rolls but rather about suppressing voter turnout for political gain.

Moreover, the timing of this purge is no coincidence. With a critical election on the horizon, this move by Texas Republicans seems designed to undermine the electoral process and disenfranchise voters who are more likely to vote against them. This blatant attempt to manipulate the voter rolls cannot go unchallenged.

We need immediate action to protect the integrity of our elections. By signing this petition, you are urging the Department of Justice to investigate these actions and hold those responsible accountable. We must ensure that every eligible voter in Texas has the opportunity to participate in our democracy.
