Tell Senate Democrats: Don't Help Trump Kill Nonprofits

On November 21, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 9495, a bill giving Donald Trump unprecedented power to target and shut down nonprofits he deems “terrorist-affiliated”—a vague and dangerously broad label. 

Shockingly, 15 House Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the bill, moving this authoritarian legislation one step closer to becoming law. Now, the Senate must act to stop this bill before it’s too late.

As Representative Lloyd Doggett warned, “This bill is not about terrorism — it’s about giving Donald Trump unlimited authority to label his opponents as terrorists.”

If passed into law, HR 9495 would grant Trump’s Treasury Secretary sweeping authority to label nonprofits as terrorist-affiliated, revoke their tax-exempt status, and effectively block their operations—all without clear oversight or accountability. 

We need Senate Democrats to block this bill. Senators Chuck Schumer, Ron Wyden, Jack Reed, Patty Murray, and Angus King hold key roles in preventing this dangerous legislation from advancing:

- Senator Wyden, as chair of the committee of jurisdiction, must ensure this bill never gets a hearing.

- Senator Reed, as Armed Services Chair, can block its inclusion in the NDAA.

- Senator Murray, as Appropriations Chair, must prevent it from being attached to year-end funding.

- Senator King, the lead Democratic sponsor of the nonprofit bill, must oppose this attack on organizations he’s worked to support.

- Senator Schumer, as Majority Leader, must ensure the bill does not reach the Senate floor for a vote under any circumstances.

H.R. 9495 is a direct threat to democracy, advocacy, and the vital work nonprofits do for communities across the country. We need Senate Democrats to stand united in opposition and ensure this bill never sees the Senate floor.
