Mohammed Ibrahim, a Florida teenager, spent nine months in Israeli military detention after being arrested at age 15. When he was released, he was hospitalized — having lost nearly a third of his body weight. He described being beaten, pepper-sprayed, and denied adequate food and medical care. A cellmate, 17-year-old Walid Ahmad, died in custody having never been charged with a crime. Fifteen members of Congress have demanded answers from Secretary Rubio. The State Department has yet to respond meaningfully. We call on Secretary Rubio to meet with Mohammed, demand an impartial investigation, and ensure those responsible are held accountable. The United States must not stay silent when its own citizens are subjected to abuse in detention.
