Tell Republicans: Hands Off FEMA

Donald Trump has announced plans to overhaul or eliminate FEMA, claiming the agency is “inefficient.” But dismantling FEMA would require congressional action, and it’s up to Speaker Mike Johnson and Congress to stand firm and protect this critical agency.

FEMA plays a vital role in disaster recovery, helping communities rebuild and providing lifesaving assistance when Americans need it most. Right now, FEMA is on the ground aiding hurricane recovery efforts in western North Carolina and wildfire recovery in Los Angeles. Without FEMA, millions of Americans facing natural disasters would be left without the help they desperately need.

Speaker Johnson, representing a state like Louisiana that has been repeatedly devastated by hurricanes and flooding, knows firsthand how important FEMA is to communities harmed by natural disasters. Yet, Republicans in Congress are considering Trump’s reckless calls to undermine or eliminate FEMA, putting the safety and recovery of countless Americans at risk.

Slashing FEMA’s budget or limiting its ability to respond to disasters would be a cruel and irresponsible move. It would abandon families in their time of need, exacerbate suffering, and jeopardize the ability of entire communities to recover after devastating storms, fires, or other disasters.

We call on Speaker Johnson and Congress to reject any attempts to dismantle, defund, or weaken FEMA. Americans deserve a government that prioritizes their safety and recovery—not one that abandons them in times of crisis.
