Tell NPR: Stop Normalizing Trump's Unhinged Cabinet Picks

As Donald Trump assembles his cabinet, the media has a critical responsibility to scrutinize his dangerous and extreme appointments. Yet NPR, a trusted source of news for millions, has been accused of normalizing Trump’s unhinged choices by omitting critical context about their alarming records.

In a recent opinion piece for Common Dreams, Julie Hollar, FAIR's senior analyst and managing editor, highlighted how NPR’s coverage of Trump’s nominees often fails to address the extremism and risks posed by these appointments. 

For example, figures like Pete Hegseth, flagged as a potential insider threat, and Tulsi Gabbard, a conspiracy theorist with troubling foreign policy views, have been presented in a way that softens their controversial records.

This kind of reporting undermines the public’s ability to hold leaders accountable and risks legitimizing far-right agendas. Publicly funded media like NPR has a duty to provide in-depth, critical reporting that challenges power and informs the public about the implications of these nominations.

We call on NPR to stop normalizing Trump’s unhinged cabinet picks. As a publicly funded media organization, NPR must prioritize accountability and transparency in its reporting—not sanitize the image of extremists who threaten democratic norms.
