The Mexican gray wolf — one of the rarest and most endangered mammals in North America — is again facing a devastating setback. Right now, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has authorized the killing of M3008, a young wolf from Arizona’s Bear Canyon pack. This wolf’s only “crime” was preying on livestock — and killing him would be a tragic mistake, both morally and scientifically. Sign the petition to Interior Secretary Burgum asking him to immediately rescind this kill order and allow this irreplaceable wolf to live. M3008’s genetic heritage makes him uniquely important to the survival of his species. His mother, who carried rare DNA, was gunned down from the air this spring — likely while pregnant. Now, her son is being targeted, even though his genes could strengthen a population already struggling with inbreeding. Some Mexican gray wolves are exhibiting signs of genetic decline, including smaller litters, lower pup survival rates, and even paw deformities. Wolves like M3008 offer hope: their less-related DNA can restore resilience and give this endangered population a fighting chance. Destroying such an invaluable wolf to appease commercial livestock interests is shortsighted and a misuse of taxpayer money to benefit private industry at the cost of this wolf's life and our country’s biodiversity. Instead of scapegoating wolves, the federal government should prioritize measures that prevent conflict in the first place — such as requiring ranchers on public lands to use proven tools, including carcass removal, range riders, and fladry fencing. Without stronger conflict-prevention standards, wolves will continue to be unfairly blamed for problems that are entirely preventable. The Mexican gray wolf population is barely beginning to recover after being driven to the brink of extinction. Every wolf with rare genes is vital. Killing M3008 would rob future generations of wolves of the diversity they desperately need to survive. Please sign the petition asking Interior Secretary Burgum to put wolves and our country ahead of commercial livestock interests, call off the aerial gunners, and let M3008 live. His survival is critical not only for his pack but for the future of the entire species. _______ Source https://mexicanwolves.org/ask-secretary-of-the-interior-doug-burgum-to-stop-the-kill-order-targeting-endangered-mexican-gray-wolf-fortis/
