Tell FIFA: Keep ICE Out of World Cup Matches

As workers prepare stadiums, hotels, transportation systems, and host cities for the 2026 World Cup, labor leaders are sounding the alarm about the possible presence of ICE and other immigration enforcement agents around matches.

In a letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and FIFA World Cup 2026 Chief Strategy and Planning Officer Amy Hopfinger, AFL-CIO President Elizabeth Shuler warned that unions have "raised grave concerns over FIFA’s engagement with the Department of Homeland Security," including the possibility of ICE and other DHS agents being present "at and around the World Cup matches."

FIFA has enormous power over how this tournament is run. FIFA President Gianni Infantino and World Cup 2026 leadership can publicly demand that immigration enforcement be kept out of host cities, clarify DHS’s role, and guarantee that worker information collected through credentialing or background checks will not be used for deportation.

ICE’s presence would not make the World Cup safer. The AFL-CIO letter warns that "ICE presence in host cities during the games could cause severe disruptions and negatively affect the success of the tournament." It also urges FIFA to consider the “financial and human impact” of collaborating with DHS.

Workers deserve to do their jobs without wondering whether a background check, a credentialing process, or a security checkpoint could put them or their families in danger. Fans and visitors deserve a tournament that is welcoming to people of every background.

FIFA cannot stay silent while the Trump administration tries to use the World Cup as another stage for immigration enforcement. Public pressure now can force FIFA to draw a bright line: security should protect the tournament, not target workers and immigrant communities.
