The Trump administration is ordering colleges to submit detailed racial data on every applicant — or face fines exceeding $71,000 per violation and loss of federal aid. This isn't civil rights enforcement. As California AG Rob Bonta put it, they are "on a fishing expedition — demanding unprecedented amounts of data from our colleges and universities under the guise of enforcing civil rights law." The same administration that dismantled the Office of Civil Rights is now weaponizing civil rights language to conduct ideologically motivated surveillance. The policy was rushed through without proper rulemaking, threatening schools with penalties for paperwork errors — not discrimination. Tell Congress: halt this mandate and protect students, institutions, and due process.
