President Trump is declaring a phony “state of emergency” in Washington, D.C., federalizing the local police, and putting his cronies in charge – against the wishes of D.C.’s residents and elected leaders. [1] It's obvious this isn't really about crime (which is at record lows in D.C. [2]), but rather a blatant attempt to make D.C. residents feel like they aren't safe in their own homes, suppress dissent, and take attention away from how Trump’s policies are leaving people worse off. Trump is seizing power – and his administration is signaling that they will keep the National Guard ready to roll into any city or state at a moment’s notice. [3] If Congress doesn’t stop him now, nowhere will be off limits. D.C.’s lack of power is a vulnerability for our democracy. Our capital is an easy first target for Trump because its 700,000 residents are still denied full democratic rights. [5] They pay more in federal taxes than residents of 22 states, yet have no voting representation in Congress. Nearly half of D.C.’s residents are Black – and their voices are silenced while Trump and his allies strip away their rights and their safety. [6] Lawmakers have introduced resolutions in the House and Senate to STOP Trump’s phony “emergency” and return power to D.C. officials. [4] Now it’s on all of us to demand our members of Congress act now and pass it. Add your name to tell Congress to pass this bill as quickly as possible and SHUT DOWN Trump’s hostile takeover of our nation’s capital city.
