Tell Congress: Stop Farm Worker Abuse

Farmworkers feed America — and Trump is pushing to let more of them be abused.

A new ProPublica investigation lays it bare: the H-2A guestworker visa program traps farmworkers in dangerous, exploitative jobs with almost no way out. Workers reported stolen wages, unsafe housing, illegal recruitment fees, and threats of deportation for speaking up. But instead of cracking down, the Trump administration weakened the rules and lowered the prevailing wage.

Congress can stop this. Lawmakers can end employer-controlled visas, protect whistleblowers, crack down on labor traffickers, and actually enforce wage and housing laws.

H-2A visas tie workers’ legal status to a single employer, handing bosses total control. Complain about abuse? You’re fired. Fired means deported. Silence becomes survival.

Now, as the abuse comes into full view, agribusiness lobbyists and Trump are pushing Congress to expand the program and weaken wage protections even further. At the same time, workers are being targeted by scammers and predatory recruiters, while enforcement agencies remain understaffed and toothless.

This is modern exploitation in plain sight. People who harvest our food are treated as disposable labor — injured, underpaid, and silenced so corporations can cut costs.
