Tell Congress: Save Animals From Extinction

A species can survive for millions of years—and disappear within a single generation. Around the world, animals are being pushed closer to extinction as their populations shrink and the wild places they depend on vanish or come under growing pressure.

Once a species is gone, it is gone forever. But Congress can help prevent more species from reaching that point by giving conservationists the tools and resources they need to protect vulnerable wildlife before it is too late.

The bipartisan Critically Endangered Animals Conservation Act of 2026 (H.R. 10073) would establish a new federal fund to support conservation projects for some of the world’s most imperiled animals.

The bill establishes the Critically Endangered Animals Conservation Fund to help provide resources to protect species that are not already receiving support through existing U.S. multinational conservation funds.

That could make a meaningful difference for animals such as snow leopards, Andean cats, African penguins, and white-backed vultures—species specifically highlighted by the bill’s sponsors as wildlife that could benefit from the new fund.

Rep. Jared Huffman, one of the bill’s lead sponsors, warned of the “alarming acceleration in species extinction,” saying the legislation would help the United States support conservation projects for some of the world’s most vulnerable species.

Those projects could protect and restore habitat, monitor threatened wildlife populations, combat illegal capture and trafficking, reduce human-wildlife conflict, address disease, and help local communities lead conservation efforts.

The United States already supports international conservation programs for elephants, rhinos, tigers, great apes, marine turtles, and tortoises. This bill would help fill an important gap by extending support to other highly threatened species that are also fighting for survival.

Every species lost leaves a permanent hole in the web of life. Congress has a chance to help prevent more animals from disappearing forever.
