The free press is a cornerstone of democracy, yet journalists increasingly face threats and intimidation. Sadly, we fear Donald Trump's re-election could lead to an escalation of those attacks. Trump has a history of hostility toward the media, labeling journalists as "enemies of the people" and suggesting that someone should "shoot" reporters. Such rhetoric endangers journalists and undermines the public's right to information. The PRESS Act, currently pending in Congress, aims to safeguard journalists from government overreach by limiting the ability to compel disclosure of sources and protecting against unwarranted surveillance. Trevor Timm, co-founder and executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, has emphasized the importance of such protections, stating, "The First Amendment is the safety valve of our democracy. It has always been the bulwark against secret government, against authoritarianism and against tyranny." We urge Congress to pass the PRESS Act to ensure that journalists can operate without fear of government retaliation or intrusion. Protecting the press is essential to maintaining transparency and accountability in our government. Sign this petition to demand that Congress uphold press freedom and protect journalists from government overreach.
