Tell Congress: Pass A Federal Ban On Conversion Therapy

The Supreme Court just took a major step toward greenlighting conversion therapy — a decision that could harm millions of LGTBQ+ kids.

In an 8-1 ruling, the Court sided with a Colorado Springs therapist backed by Alliance Defending Freedom — ruling that Colorado's ban on conversion therapy for minors likely violates the First Amendment.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson warned that the decision "opens a dangerous can of worms," threatens states' ability to protect patients, and "risks grave harm to Americans' health and wellbeing." And we agree.

Conversion therapy is not medicine. It is a pseudoscientific practice that every major medical organization — including the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics — has condemned as ineffective and harmful. The United Nations classifies it as torture. Youth who experience it are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide.

Colorado passed its ban in 2019 to protect children from exactly this kind of harm. The Trump administration argued against that protection. Eight justices agreed with them, and put kids’ lives at risk.

If the courts won’t protect our kids, then Congress must take action.
