Republicans are proposing to eliminate ACA subsidies and give Americans cash for health savings accounts paired with high-deductible health plans instead. This is a failed two-decade experiment that has left 100 million Americans with medical debt despite having insurance. The evidence is clear: Average worker deductibles have jumped from $300 in 2006 to nearly $1,700 today. Only 7% of health care spending is for services patients can realistically shop for. Cancer patients with high-deductible plans face higher mortality rates. Medical prices have skyrocketed even as deductibles increased. High-deductible plans force families to choose between getting care and financial ruin. One mother with insurance was buried in $13,000 of debt, lost her home, and had her car repossessed—all while working and being insured. Congress must reject proposals that would push more Americans into high-deductible plans. Instead, Congress must reduce out-of-pocket costs and medical debt for American families.
