Tell Congress: No Immunity for Big Oil

As climate disasters like wildfires, floods, and heatwaves grow more extreme, communities around the country are seeking to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable. Big Oil companies knew the harms their products would cause to the global climate yet lied to the public and policymakers for decades and delayed climate action.

Write today and demand your members of Congress explicitly reject the Trump administration's efforts to shield the fossil fuel industry from legal liability.

Today, one in four people in the United States live in a state, territory, or municipality that is suing major fossil fuel corporations to hold them accountable for climate deception and the massive resulting harms. A growing number of US state legislatures are considering climate superfund laws, which would require the corporations responsible for the most heat-trapping emissions to pay their share for the growing costs to protect public infrastructure from climate-driven damages.

Now, fossil fuel companies are trying to escape accountability for the damage they have caused. Just weeks after meeting with the CEOs of ExxonMobil, Chevron, and other oil and gas corporations, President Trump signed an executive order targeting states' rights to make polluters pay through litigation and legislation. Then, the Trump Department of Justice filed unprecedented lawsuits against states that had plans to take legal action against the fossil fuel industry, and against states that have passed climate superfund laws. Members of Congress must stand up to these overreaching actions that aim to intimidate local elected officials.

Your legislators in Congress need to hear from you that they must explicitly reject efforts to shield the fossil fuel industry from facing legal and legislative consequences for its role in the climate crisis.
