As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. government increased the Child Tax Credit and made it more accessible to the families most in need. The expanded Child Tax Credit of 2021 reached more than 61 million kids, keeping millions of children out of poverty each month by helping families pay for child care, groceries, transportation, household utilities, and other essentials. The results were incredible, the expanded Child Tax Credit: - Helped more than 61 million children; - Lifted nearly 4 million kids out of poverty; - Decreased childhood food insecurity and hunger by 26%; - Helped families meet the rising cost of living; - Increased overall rates of childhood wellness; and - Narrowed racial gaps in childhood poverty. However, when the credit reverted to the pre-pandemic norm, the progress diminished entirely. The solution is simple: restore the expanded Child Tax Credit and MAKE IT PERMANENT.
