Tell Congress: Keep Public Dollars in Public Schools

School vouchers and tax credit schemes are putting our public schools in danger.

Senator Bernie Sanders just released a report exposing what these programs really do: drain funding from public schools and hand taxpayer money to private institutions that can discriminate, exclude students with disabilities, and operate with almost no public accountability.

Last year, Congress passed a federal school voucher and tax credit scheme designed to funnel public dollars into private schools. The good news? It doesn’t take effect until 2027, and states have to opt in first. That means there is still time for Congress to reverse course and stop it.

Tell Congress: “Cancel the federal school voucher and tax credit scheme before it takes effect. Protect public education and keep our tax dollars where they belong — in public schools.”

We’ve seen the damage already. In states with vouchers, public schools lose funding, teachers are laid off, and class sizes grow. Meanwhile, private schools get public money with no obligation to serve every child. That’s not “choice.” It’s a rigged giveaway.

Voucher supporters want this to feel inevitable. It isn’t. This scheme hasn’t gone into effect yet — and that’s our opening. Once states are pressured to opt in, reversing course becomes far harder and the damage becomes permanent.

But Congress still has the power to stop this before it starts.

Add your name now and tell Congress to keep public dollars in public schools.

The petition to Congress reads: “Cancel the federal school voucher and tax credit scheme before it takes effect. Protect public education and keep our tax dollars where they belong — in public schools.”
