Tell Congress: Investigate ICE’s Austin Shooting Now

An ICE agent shot a man in Austin, Texas on Sunday — and  the public deserves the full truth.

Wilber Rafael Garces Perez was shot by an ICE officer during an immigration enforcement operation in North Austin. City officials say local police were not involved in the operation, and his attorney says Garces Perez was later released from the hospital into federal custody.

That means the agency responsible for the shooting now also holds the injured man in its custody. ICE cannot be allowed to investigate itself behind closed doors while the person it shot is detained.

Austin officials are already calling for transparency and a real outside review. But ICE and DHS have a long history of secrecy, obstruction, and internal investigations that leave families and the public without answers.
