Tell Congress: Don’t Let Trump Hold Housing Relief Hostage

Congress just passed housing relief for millions. But yesterday, Donald Trump abruptly canceled plans to sign it. Why? So he could hold relief hostage and bully Congress into restricting our freedom to vote.

The bipartisan housing bill could lower costs, expand housing supply, support affordable housing, and crack down on corporate investors buying up homes. With rents crushing families and homeownership slipping out of reach, this bill is a rare chance to deliver real help.

Now Trump is refusing to sign the bill unless Congress passes his unrelated SAVE Act first — a voter suppression bill that would make it harder for eligible Americans to register and vote. But Congress can make the housing bill law without him, if they refuse to cave.

Tell Congress: Refuse to give in to Trump’s threats. Keep the housing bill alive, stay in session, and let it become law if Trump refuses to sign or veto it.

Once a bill reaches the president’s desk, the president has 10 days, not counting Sundays, to sign it or veto it. If he does neither, and Congress remains in session, the bill becomes law without his signature. That means Trump cannot kill housing relief by simply ignoring it — unless Congress lets him.

Working families should not be punished because Trump wants political leverage. Renters, seniors, people with disabilities, first-time homebuyers, and communities squeezed by corporate landlords need relief now — not another MAGA ultimatum.

Congress must not accept Trump’s ransom demand. Congress needs to stay in session, hold the line, and make sure housing relief becomes law.

If Congress folds, Trump will learn he can block help for working people whenever he wants to force through an extremist demand. If Congress stands firm, it can protect housing relief and voting rights at the same time.
