Donald Trump just let the most powerful people in tech write their own safety rules. This week, he gathered Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Dario Amodei, and the rest of Silicon Valley's top brass at the White House. They signed a pledge to police themselves. Trump called it "morally binding." But there's no law behind it, and no penalties. Just a promise from the people with every incentive to break it. Trump told reporters he'd "never stifle" AI's growth and waved off calls for actual regulation. Preventing regulation was the entire goal. If he won't do his job, then it's up to Congress to do theirs. Tell Congress: "Reject Big Tech's self-policing accord. Pass binding AI safety legislation now." The threat of uncontrolled AI isn't theoretical. Earlier this year, an AI system fed a U.S. military analyst a false report claiming a Chinese ship was carrying nuclear weapons components. The military moved to intercept it by force, but the report was wrong. We nearly stumbled into a global crisis thanks to AI failure. Trump's FTC finally opened a probe into Anthropic, OpenAI, and other labs. But we can't trust the same administration that just blessed a voluntary pledge to actually hold these companies accountable and keep us safe. Zuckerberg and Musk didn't write these rules to protect you. They wrote them to protect themselves. Their own accord admits it's not enough, and Congress doesn't have to pretend otherwise. Bipartisan legislation, like the Stop Rogue AI Act, already offers one place to start holding these companies accountable. Lawmakers are already digging into AI's tax breaks and safety failures. The industry's own words are on the record. Now is the time for Congress to take the next step in preventing a major crisis. Sign now — before the next AI failure is one Congress can't walk back. The petition to Congress reads: "Reject the AI industry's voluntary self-policing accord. Pass binding federal AI safety legislation with mandatory third-party audits, incident reporting requirements, and real legal consequences when AI systems cause harm."
