Tell Congress: Block Restitution to January 6 Rioters

They attacked our democracy. Now they want a payout.

On the anniversary of the January 6 insurrection, convicted rioters and their MAGA allies went back to Washington to demand taxpayer-funded “restitution” for the consequences of their own violence. Backed by Donald Trump and embraced by Republican extremists, they’re pushing Congress to reimburse insurrectionists for fines, legal fees, and lost income.

This moment matters. If violence is rewarded, it will be repeated. If accountability disappears, democracy is at risk.

Tell Congress: “Block restitution to January 6 rioters. Ban taxpayer payouts to insurrectionists and make it clear — no rewards for coups, ever.”

January 6 was a violent assault on the peaceful transfer of power. More than 140 police officers were injured defending the Capitol. Lawmakers fled for their lives. The Constitution was put on hold by force. 

Paying restitution to the people who carried out the January 6 attack would reward political violence and insult everyone who stood up to defend democracy.

Trump has already issued sweeping pardons to January 6 offenders, including people who later faced new criminal charges. Now the next step is clear: erase accountability completely and make working families foot the bill for an attempted coup. If Congress allows this, it sends a clear message that attacking democracy pays.

Congress can still stop it. Legislators on both sides of the aisle have already spoken out against restitution. And senators have introduced legislation to permanently ban taxpayer payouts to January 6 rioters. We can stop this payout if we speak out now.
