Tell Congress: Ban High-Tech Price Fixing On Rent

Landlords used an algorithm to act like a cartel — and renters paid the price. Now Congress must shut this down for good.

For years, a company called RealPage provided rent-setting software that helped corporate landlords coordinate price hikes, eliminate discounts, and even keep units empty to drive rents higher. This “algorithmic collusion” pushed rents up nationwide.

Congress cannot let corporate landlords hide behind technology to fix prices. Lawmakers must ban rent-setting algorithms, outlaw the sharing of confidential rent data, and give the DOJ and the Federal Trade Commission real power to stop this high-tech cheating once and for all.

Tell Congress: “Ban high-tech price fixing on rent. Outlaw algorithmic collusion, protect tenants, and put people over profit.”

When the Department of Justice launched a lawsuit against RealPage a year ago, advocates hoped for real change. But Trump’s DOJ just gave them a weak deal. No admission of wrongdoing. No fines. And plenty of loopholes that let the industry rebuild the same rent-hiking system under a new name.

Now, RealPage is even suing New York to stop a new ban on algorithmic rent-setting — claiming its price-hike software is “free speech.” The only way to end this digital cartel is for us to expose it and put pressure on Congress to ban it nationwide.

Add your name to stop corporate landlords from committing price-fixing on rent. Sign the petition to Congress now.

The petition to Congress reads: “Ban high-tech price fixing on rent. Outlaw algorithmic collusion, protect tenants, and put people over profit.”
