Our schools are hemorrhaging teachers. Low pay, high stress, and growing burnout are driving them out — and students are paying the price. Senator Bernie Sanders, Ranking Member of the Senate HELP Committee, just introduced the Pay Teachers Act to guarantee every public school teacher earns at least $60,000 a year. It’s bold, overdue — and our best chance at saving public education. But this bill won’t move unless we act fast and make our voices impossible to ignore. Currently, approximately 1 in 3 teachers earns less than $60,000 per year. Nearly 20% of first-year teachers earn under $40,000. Public school educators report more stress and anxiety than almost any other profession. And the consequences are clear: nearly 1 in 8 teaching positions in America is vacant or filled by someone who is not fully certified. This is a national emergency — and it demands urgent action.
