Armed conflict has broken out across Sudan, and we cannot look away from the plight of pregnant women in the region who are giving birth amid traumatic violence. With only one in four health facilities fully operational in Sudan’s capital, war has forced women to give birth in their homes and in cars. One pregnant woman was shot in military crossfire on the way to deliver her baby. While medical personnel were able to save the baby, tragically, the mother died. 219,000 women are currently pregnant in the capital — tens of thousands of whom will give birth in the coming weeks — meaning that unless we act quickly, this heartbreaking story won’t be the last.
