Support Gov. Cooper's Veto to Protect Democracy in NC

We commend North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper for vetoing a partisan bill that would strip crucial powers from incoming Democratic leaders and undermine democratic governance. This sweeping legislation, rushed through the Republican-controlled legislature, aimed to weaken Governor-elect Josh Stein and other statewide officials, while making undemocratic changes to the State Board of Elections and judicial appointment processes.

Governor Cooper called out this bill for what it is: a “sham” disguised as disaster relief that fails to provide adequate support for communities devastated by Hurricane Helene. Instead, the bill attempts to dismantle constitutional checks and balances by giving disproportionate power to political parties and diminishing the authority of the state’s executive leaders.
