For over two decades, Republican and Democratic administrations alike have supported the National Climate Assessment (NCA) — a congressionally mandated report that shows how climate change threatens Americans’ health, homes, and livelihoods. But in a troubling reversal, NASA now says it won’t host these reports on its website after the Trump administration dismantled the globalchange.gov portal. This move risks burying critical information Americans depend on to prepare for rising climate dangers. This is part of a broader pattern of climate censorship under the Trump administration, which earlier this year cut funding for the Global Change Research Program and dismissed scientists preparing the next assessment. The NCA, first published in 2000, is a cornerstone of U.S. climate science and policy. It documents how extreme heat, floods, wildfires, and other impacts are already affecting every part of the country and offers guidance for communities to adapt. Farmers, public health officials, and businesses rely on these reports for life-saving and cost-saving decisions. NASA originally promised to provide continuity by hosting these reports after the previous site was taken down. But the agency abruptly reversed course, saying it had “no legal obligation” to do so. While NOAA retains an archive, losing NASA as a host severely limits the public’s ability to find and use this information. NASA must reconsider and honor its commitment to science and the ability of communities to make informed choices to prepare for climate change.. Transparency isn’t optional when lives and livelihoods are on the line. Americans deserve open access to these critical scientific findings, not barriers that hide the truth about the climate crisis. Please sign the petition now to demand NASA restore public access to the National Climate Assessments.
