America’s railroads are on the brink of disaster. Union Pacific wants to swallow Norfolk Southern and create the first coast-to-coast freight railroad in U.S. history. If this deal goes through, just a handful of corporations will control nearly all rail traffic — driving up costs, slashing service, endangering workers, and putting Wall Street profits over our communities. Railroad workers, unions, shippers, and watchdogs are united in opposition. They know from painful experience that mergers like this lead to chaos: clogged terminals, lost cargo, exhausted workers, unsafe conditions, and skyrocketing prices for everyone who depends on freight. Rail labor organizations have been especially outspoken. The largest U.S. railroad operations union, SMART, has condemned Union Pacific’s hostile treatment of workers and troubling safety record, insisting no more power should be entrusted to such a company. Railroad Workers United has also come out strongly against the deal, warning that it will not improve rail service or benefit the public but instead simply line the pockets of investors at everyone else’s expense. We cannot let another rail monopoly take root. The Surface Transportation Board must reject this reckless deal. It’s time to stand up for workers, shippers, and passengers—and demand a rail system that serves the public good, not corporate greed. Add your name today to stop the merger and protect America’s railroads.
