Stop the Killing: Demand Justice for Montana’s Wolves

Montana’s wolves are once again in grave danger — and this year, the threat is more extreme than anything we’ve seen in over a decade. State officials have approved a shocking plan that would allow hunters and trappers to kill up to 558 wolves this season. That’s potentially half of all the wolves in Montana — a level of killing that scientists warn is far beyond what the population can survive.

Montana’s own data shows that wolf numbers become unstable when annual deaths exceed just 27%. But this reckless quota could push mortality far past that threshold, risking a collapse of the state’s wolf population. Even worse, Montana is relying on outdated and highly unreliable population modeling — methods that inflate wolf numbers and ignore major gaps in monitoring. In other words, officials are approving one of the deadliest wolf-killing seasons in years without even knowing how many wolves actually exist.

Wolves aren’t just iconic wildlife — they are keystone animals essential to healthy ecosystems. They keep prey herds balanced, protect forests and waterways, support biodiversity, and maintain the natural resilience of Montana’s wild landscapes. But instead of safeguarding this native species, state leaders are pushing an extreme, politically motivated agenda that puts wolves directly in harm’s way.
